Look carefully at the pinwheel or triangle in the water meter to see if it is moving. If so, it means water is passing through the meter; i.e., you have a leak and are being charged for water you are not using. Take note of how fast it is spinning. If the triangle or pinwheel is moving slowly, this usually indicates a minor leak, such as a running toilet. Faster spins indicate a more major leak, the easily identifiable type. If you have a tankless water heater located in an unheated garage, in an attic, or outside in the exterior wall, special care must be taken to protect these units. They have built-in heaters that will protect the inside of the unit from freezing. This will not protect the piping to the unit. It also will not work if the power goes out. Keep your pipes from freezing by: - Opening cabinet doors below fixtures to allow warm air to circulate as close as possible to the pipes. - Keeping your thermostat set slightly higher to protect the pipes running through the walls. - Using a space heater in colder areas to warm the pipes.
